Reclamation Yard - Environmentally friendly

Using reclaimed materials not only gives the project a unique look, its also good for the environment. Here we take a look at what's available from Romsey reclamation yard which is based in the south of England.

One of the largest reclamation yards and stockists of used wooden railway sleepers in the south, customers include Local Authorities, Housing Associations, Stately Homes, Listed Buildings and also Private House Owners. They were recently featured on the "HomeFront" TV programme.

Owner Mr. Trevor Halfacre has been using words like "Environmentally friendly" and "The green issue" since he opened his yard over 20 years ago.

As you can see from the picture, using reclaimed sleepers instead of brick or block can create the natural look your customer is after. On the building side, a competent labourer or jobber rather than expensive tradesmen can be used.

Trevor tells us he used to be amazed at the uses his customers found for his sleepers but thinks he's heard and seen them all by now. He's sold them for edging streams and ponds, decking steps and even to golf courses for building bunkers.

Other items found in the reclamation yard include telegraph poles, slates and tiles of all sizes, York stone and a large selection of bricks, both hand and machine made.
