According to recent research conducted by the TDA, demand for timber decking remains high and the market grew by around 10% in 2003 to £110m. The TDA is particularly concerned that high consumer demand for decking is attracting rogue traders out to make cash quickly. AH Garden Services gave us their decking tips on what people should be watching for during the construction of their decking. Here's what they told us. The foundation work for your deck is always hidden by the decking, so its important you make sure it is done correctly. We've replaced decking built on pallets laid on the ground, which over time have just warped and rotted. The foundation work is about 70% of the actual decking job. We lay a quality landscape fabric membrane to 6x2 pressure treated timbers should be used for the sub frame and make sure any cut ends are treated. They should be fixed with galvanised joist brackets. Nails or nail guns should not be needed in a well built deck. Screws and coach bolts are the professionals choice. The sub frame should be supported off the ground by 4x4 treated posts inserted in special anchor brackets and fastened with concrete.
