Outdoor Lighting - Planning your outdoor lighting to get the most from your garden space

If you have recently had work done to garden such as landscaping, building a patio or deck etc. you have probably already given thought to some outdoor lighting. You aren't alone either, outdoor lighting is now so popular their are people out there making a living designing the lighting in gardens to create certain atmospheres or to highlight particular features such as a pond, large tree or ornament.

If you aren't going for the spectacular effect with prison strength spotlights or a "Batman, we need you" lamp you can create some decent effects with a few solar powered lights in your garden.

Positioned along a garden path and around your patio means you will be able to keep the party going long after sundown. Spending any time in your garden at night is a completely different experience to sitting out catching some rays. The wildlife is different as is the atmosphere and it can be very calming if its not too cold.

Because solar powered outdoor lighting needs no cables you can spend plenty of time experimenting by moving them around and seeing what moods and effects you can create.

Try placing under a bush for instance or within a blooming flower bed and see what happens. If you have a water feature or better still, a pond, you will be able to create some magical effects that will have you eagerly awaiting sundown.

You can start by just buying a set of outdoor lights that only include a few . After trying and experimenting you will then know how many you need to purchase.

Another added benefit of outdoor lighting is the extra security it brings to your property. A criminal is simply going to move on to the next garden when he looks over your garden wall and see's your patio in lighting. Why take the risk of trying to force an entry through a door when he is bathed in light?

If you do want your lighting to be more substantial it will probably be best to approach an outdoor lighting company. Cables have to be laid and hidden and it all needs to be connected to the mains board with the required safety laws adhered to.

These companies can offer lots of advice and while the final decision is of course yours, you should pick their brains and ask lots of questions. You will have our own ideas as the effect you want to create. Ask their opinion, do they see it working? Will it be too bright or too dim?

Think about the safety aspect as well as the effect you are wanting. You don't want to be throwing shadows over a set of steps for instance and end up making them dangerous. Safety should be especially considered if a member of the household is elderly or perhaps very young. A garden lit at night creates the moth effect: everyone wants to go outside!

We now spend more time than ever in the garden and with some outdoor lighting we can spend even more time out there. Outdoor lighting will make your patio or deck accessible when before it wasn't. It will create illuminated effects to the plant life in your garden. It will make your garden safer and your home more secure, what are you waiting for?
