The Safe Use of Ladders

Check the condition of the ladder before using it. Make sure it is in good working order and is strong enough for the job. Never use a painted ladder as the paint can hide defects.

Make sure that the ladder

  • is on a firm surface.
  • is at the correct level (1 out for every 4 up).
  • is fixed at the top if possible.
  • is footed at the base while the ladder is being used.
  • extends at least a meter past any landing used to get on or off.

When using a ladder to work from, make sure

  • The work can be done with 1 hand.
  • The work can be reached without overstretching.
  • The ladder is secured and footed.

Always use a ladder for working from as a last resort. Many accidents happen within 30 minutes of work starting because the ladder wasn't secured properly, in the right place etc.
