Useful Concrete Repair Guide
Proper planning is essential for the successful repair of concrete. The right preparation of the area that is in need of repair is the most important part of a successful outcome. When completing concrete restoration be sure that you keep the cracked surface wet and there are no tapered edges. The most commonly performed type of concrete restoration consists of repairing a crack or hole in a driveway or sidewalk.
When working with a hole with tapered edges be aware that this can make your patch less durable. A tapered edge will give you a thin layer of patch that is likely to peel away quickly. You can usually achieve better results if you use a chisel or saw with a masonry blade to make the edges deeper before patching. You want to avoid having any areas where the patch is too thin. Always carefully follow the instructions for the patching compounds. Usually you will want a consistency similar to thick gravy.
You should mix only as much compound as can be used within twenty minutes. If you are not using a bonding agent with water based compound you will need to get the surface wet before applying the patching compound. You will want to read and follow the directions of any bonding agent you use.
With a very deep hole considering placing steel pieces into the hole to act as reinforcement. This will help your patch stay in place. The steel pieces should be half an inch under the top of the patch. Finish your patched area using a finishing tool. You will get the best results if you give the patch time to harden before you finish it. The area should then be covered with plastic and use rocks or other heavy items to keep the area covered for 3 days. You do not want the patching compound to dry out too fast so do not make repairs in hot sunny weather. A concrete repair tip: repairs are best made in cloudy and damp weather. Avoid making repairs during freezing temperatures.
